If you own a saltwater pool, your salt cell is doing a lot of quiet, important work. It converts salt into chlorine through a process called salt water chlorination, keeping your water sanitized without you having to manually dose it with harsh chemicals. But over time, calcium and other minerals from hard water build up on the cell's plates, reducing its efficiency and shortening its lifespan.
Cleaning it sounds simple enough - until you crack it. That happens more often than people think, usually because of one wrong move with the wrong substance.
Here is how to do it right.

As the cell does its job, calcium deposits from your pool water accumulate on the titanium plates inside. This scaling blocks the surface area the cell needs to produce chlorine effectively. If left unchecked, your pool water chemistry suffers, your pH and alkalinity drift, and your cell burns out faster.
Most cells need cleaning every three to six months, depending on your water hardness and usage.
Before you touch anything, gather your supplies. You do not need anything exotic, but using the wrong tool or the wrong solution (chemistry matters here) can cause real damage.
You will need a cell cleaning stand or a plastic bucket, a garden hose with fresh water access, a diluted acid solution made from hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid), safety goggles, and chemical-resistant gloves. Do not use anything made of wood or metal to scrape the plates.
Plastic is fine for light physical contact, but the acid does most of the work.
A note on dilution: A common ratio is one part hydrochloric acid to ten parts water. Always add acid to water, never the other way around. This is basic chemistry safety that prevents dangerous reactions.
Turn off your pool pump and carefully remove the salt cell from its housing. Use a garden hose to rinse off any loose debris. This initial fresh water rinse removes surface dirt before the acid does the deeper work.
Hold the cell up to light and look inside. Light calcium buildup appears as a white, chalky coating, similar to mineral residue you might see in hard water areas. Heavier deposits look gray or brown and will feel rough.
Place the cell upright in your cleaning stand or a plastic bucket. Pour your diluted hydrochloric acid mixture into the cell carefully, making sure it covers the plates. You will see it fizzing - that is the acid reacting with the calcium deposits. This is normal and means it is working.
Let it soak for 5 to 15 minutes. Do not leave it longer than necessary. Over-soaking damages the coating on the plates and can lead to premature cell failure.
Once the fizzing stops or slows significantly, pour out the acid solution responsibly and rinse the cell thoroughly with fresh water. Repeat until there is no acid residue left. Residual acid that gets back into your pool water will tank your pH and alkalinity fast.
Do a final visual check. If deposits remain, you can repeat the soak - but shorten the time. Once the plates look clean, reinstall the cell, restart your pump, and check your water chemistry within 24 hours.
Never use a pressure washer directly on the cell. Never use full-strength acid. Never scrape the plates with anything rigid. These are the three fastest ways to crack or corrode a cell that would otherwise last years.
