If you've ever tested your pool water and stared at two different chlorine readings wondering which one actually matters, you're not alone. The difference between free chlorine and total chlorine confuses a lot of pool owners, but understanding it is one of the simplest ways to protect your water quality and the people swimming in it.

Let's break it down in plain terms.

What Free Chlorine Actually Does

Free chlorine is the active disinfectant in your pool. It's the chlorine that's available and ready to do its job, killing bacteria, breaking down contaminants, and keeping your water safe. When you add sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach) or any other chlorine-based product to your pool, what you're adding is free chlorine.

In chemistry terms, free chlorine exists as hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion dissolved in the water. Hypochlorous acid is the more powerful of the two and works best when your pH is kept in the right range, typically between 7.2 and 7.6.

The ideal free chlorine level in a swimming pool is generally 1 to 3 parts per million (ppm). Keeping it in that range means your water has enough active sanitizer to stay clean without becoming harsh on skin or eyes.

What Total Chlorine Tells You

Total chlorine is the sum of two things: free chlorine plus combined chlorine. Combined chlorine is the chlorine that has already reacted with ammonia, nitrogen compounds, sweat, urine, sunscreen, and other organic material introduced by swimmers. Once chlorine bonds with these substances through a chemical reaction, it forms chloramines.

Chloramines, particularly monochloramine, are essentially spent chlorine. They're no longer effective as a disinfectant, but they don't just disappear. They stay in the water and cause real problems.

The Gap Between the Two Numbers Is Your Chloramine Level

Here's the part that matters most. If your free chlorine reading is 2 ppm and your total chlorine is 2.5 ppm, that 0.5 ppm difference is your combined chlorine, meaning your chloramine level.

A combined chlorine level above 0.2 ppm is generally considered a problem. The higher it climbs, the worse it gets.

Chloramines are responsible for:

  • That strong "chlorine smell" pools often get (ironically, a well-balanced pool should have little to no odor)

  • Eye and skin irritation in swimmers

  • Respiratory discomfort, especially in poorly ventilated indoor pools

  • Reduced sanitizing power even when chlorine appears present in test results

If your pool smells strongly of chlorine or swimmers are complaining about red eyes, the issue is almost never too much chlorine. It's almost always chloramines, which means not enough effective free chlorine relative to the contamination load.

How to Fix a Chloramine Problem

The solution is a process called breakpoint chlorination, more commonly called shock treatment. You're essentially adding enough chlorine to the water to overwhelm the chloramines and break them apart.

To reach breakpoint, you need to raise free chlorine to roughly 10 times your combined chlorine level. If combined chlorine is at 0.5 ppm, you need to push free chlorine up to at least 5 ppm to break through.

After shocking, free chlorine should gradually return to normal levels, and your total chlorine reading should be very close to your free chlorine reading. When those two numbers are nearly identical, your water is in good shape.
